Finding the Time.

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

The other night I was watching an interview with Barack Obama on the CBS show 60 minutes. I found the interview riveting.

In sure, like most interviews he has done in the last few months, he was asked about certain key issues regarding the U.S. political situation, however I found the questions regarding his uncanny ability to handle the stress of the campaign the most intriguing part of the interview.

The interviewer Steve Kroft remarked, “I’ve seen you in the morning, well knowing you’re getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night (during this campaign) and you look pretty good…”

Obama replied, “well I’ve been religious about getting my exercise, I work-out every morning and that definitely helps…”

I find that remarkable! I’m sure I will never relate to the pressure and the stress of a presidential campaign, however I find it truly inspirational that he has made the time to take care of his self through such demanding time of his life.

If anyone has an excuse to be “too busy”, or to “not have enough time”, to exercise or look after themselves, I’m sure Barack Obama would have hundreds of reasons.

Just the same, I am inspired when I hear stories of everyday people who have equally hectic schedules, who make the time to improve their health. I believe not only does it make them better mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, employees….(you get the picture) ….it dramatically impacts the quality and direction of their health in the future.

My suggestion – if you are like me – if I say “I should work out more”, things never get done! Pick the times (start with 3 days a week even) write it down, put it in your Blackberry or calendar, tell someone about it to keep you accountable and start moving forward. You’ll be surprised at the result!

Does Chiropractic Cure Cancer?

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

The biggest misconception about chiropractic is that chiropractors claim to cure disease. That is in fact, not true. Chiropractors do not “cure” anything. Rather, chiropractic optimizes the natural God-given strength of your body to function and heal the way it is supposed to.

Optimizing the function of your spine and nervous system is not “curing” disease….it is unleashing the healing “power” that your body already has so that your body can function, heal and defend itself….just the way it’s intended to. Chiropractic does not cure any specific condition…..Chiropractic care helps to elevate the overall function of the body so that it can return to a state of balance (or a state of wellness).

So could a person with cancer be helped with chiropractic care? Absolutely! Again, we would negligent in saying that we can “cure” cancer, but the human body has amazing restorative capabilities. It is well documented that cancer is present in the body long before the first symptoms appear. The best chance to prevent cancer is to ensure your body is functioning at full strength so that your body’s immune system is fighting with full force well before cancerous cells ever become an issue.

Did you know your body is fighting off cancer cells right now? What would happen if those cells doing battle within your body (at this very moment) weren’t getting the right directions from your nervous system? Do you think they would be more or less effective about getting the job done (ie. finding and killing cancer cells?)

Helping one’s nerve system to work properly is critical to maintain wellness. If there is pressure on the nervous system as a result of a poorly functioning or aligned spine, this pressure will interfere with flow of LIFE to the cells supplied by those nerves. If you recall, when cells start getting disconnected from the brain, what starts to happen? They start moving from health to sickness, from life to death.

This same basic principle explains why several patients with high blood pressure, digestive problems, poor immune system function, depression, etc, dramatically improve with regular chiropractic adjustments. It is also true that proper nutrition, keeping an ideal body weight, regular exercise, having healthy and positive thoughts, etc…are essential components to optimizing the healing ability of your body too!

Depression…is it strictly bad brain chemistry?

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Depression is rarely a brain issue. But it is always treated as one by using medications. Typically there is a cause, which goes unaddressed when simply taking a drug.

Depression is predominantly a degenerative, lifestyle related disease due to radically insufficient attention to one or more of the five essentials of Maximized Living.

Multiple areas of lifestyle affect hormone levels and serotonin. Simply using a drug to stop the uptake of serotonin is radically oversimplifying the situation and results in many, many side effects.

Look first for causes that can be addressed below. If all else fails, then it may need medical intervention. But all rarely fails.

FIVE STEPS TO BECOMING DEPRESSED, ANXIOUS, AND FEARFUL

Step 1: Become toxic. Modern medications, modern foods, and chemically based household products have toxins that remain in the system and destroy hormonal function and alter physiology.

Step 2: Do not get adjusted. Allow your neck (cervical spine) to shift forward, lose its normal curve, and degenerate. Make sure the top two vertebrae in the neck stay out of alignment so the area where the spinal cord interacts with the brain completely breaks down and causing diseases related to brain function.

Step 3: Eat this way

A diet high in carbohydrates so that you can leave a constant level of insulin in the system which lowers serotonin levels and causes inflammation.

A diet deficient in Omega 3 and proficient in Omega 6, which Oxford and Harvard have found to be the first factor to address regarding depression.

A diet high in grains and sugars and low in vegetables, giving you acid PH levels.

Drink a lot of Cokes and lattes. Stimulants, sugars, and artificial additives are great for brain function.

Do not supplement. Rely on processed foods for all your nutrients.

Step 4: Warning, do not exercise! A sedentary lifestyle has many damaging effects to function and mental health. That is why exercise consistently matches or exceeds the benefits of antidepressants in studies.

Step 5: Hate people, don’t forgive, be right all the time, sleep less than 8 hours every night, and if you have been through emotional traumas, by all means, do not get any help from a professional counselor or work with God!

THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A TONGUE IN CHEEK WAY OF POINTING OUT THE OBVIOUS. WE DO A WHOLE LOT WITH OUR LIFESTYLE, BUT IGNORE A WHOLE LOT AS WELL. THAT LEADS TO ALL DISEASE, INCLUDING MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL ONES. Depression is an extremely tough and sensitive issue. Rather than, however, succumbing to the victim of a “bad brain” mentality, it is always better to take a proactive approach first. You will always improve and there are no side effects!

Study finds antidepressants no better than sugar pills.

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Study: Four of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants, including Prozac, work no better than placebo sugar pills to help mild to moderate depression, says a study published in PloS (Public Library of Science) Medicine. Irving Kirsch of the department of psychology at Hull University in England and colleagues in the U.S. and Canada compared trial results for patients taking a sugar pill with those given the antidepressants fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Seroxat), venlafaxine (Effexor) and nefazodone (Serzone). They found that patients felt better but those on placebos improved as much as those on the drugs. The only exception: the most severely depressed did better on the drugs.

Method: Using freedom of information rules, researchers obtained a full set of trial data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, including results the drug companies had chosen not to publish.

Background: Prozac has been used by 40 million patients since 1988.

Claim: “There seems little reason to prescribe antidepressant medication to any but the most severely depressed patients, unless alternative treatments have failed to provide a benefit,” Kirsch says. Alternatives include talk therapy.
